Sports at Peterhouse
In addition to the many university-wide sports societies, there are also a number of opportunities to play sport at the inter-college level. Currently, Peterhouse fields sports teams in everything from table-tennis to football. Since we are a small college, we welcome all players of absolutely any ability whatsoever (!) to come and have a laugh with us as we compete against other colleges each weekend.
Peterhouse’s free sports facilities include a squash court, table tennis and a pool table and furthermore 2015 will see the opening of a new indoor gym. Although we don’t have a sports ground or indoor courts of our own, we borrow those belonging to other colleges, local schools or nearby sports centres which are rarely further than a ten minute walk away. There’s even a croquet lawn and equipment which are a source of much entertainment in the summer, since very few of us actually know what on earth to do with it!
The one sport at which Peterhouse gets truly competitive is rowing. Despite the fact that almost nobody has touched an oar before they arrive at Cambridge, the sport’s great camaraderie makes it one of the most popular here. Should you choose to have a go, Peterhouse owns a fantastic boat house down on the River Cam which is decked out with a variety of different rowing boats as well as indoor equipment such as rowing machines. All these facilities, together with expert coaching, are offered to all students entirely for free – check out the Peterhouse Boat Club website to find out more.
